PSALM 117 – SHORT AND SWEET
Psalm 117 is the shortest chapter in the Bible and the shortest psalm. It also marks the middle of our English Bible. This psalm reminds us that our expressions of praise and worship need not be lengthy to be acceptable to God or effective for us. We see the same principle with regard to prayer in the Bible. It is not the length of our prayers; it is the heart and motivation of the one praying that is most important to God.
I am reminded when thinking about the power of a few words of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. A popular orator stood and spoke for hours before Lincoln shared his brief appropriate remarks. No one can remember what this orator said. However, President Lincoln’s brief and beautiful declaration has resounded through history.
The psalmist first calls us to praise the Lord then in verse 2, he reveals the cause of praise. The phrase, “Praise the Lord” forms the expression Hallelujah. The word hallel means “to shine.” The psalmist desires that we shine for God so others can clearly see Him in our lives.
Note also that the psalmist is inviting all nations and all peoples to praise the Lord. He is worthy of universal acknowledgement of who He is and one day God will receive proper recognition from people representing every tribe, nation, language and people. The cause of our praise is His loyal love. This expresses His goodness, kindness, and faithfulness. The author states that His loyal love towers over us. This means His loyal love gives us strength to prevail, to overcome. It has the same impact of Paul’s words to the Roman Christians. “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31)
The psalmist ends this brief praise by reminding us that God’s faithfulness endures. He is sure, dependable, and reliable always. We can count on Him forever.
Lord, help us to value your loyal love and faithfulness toward us. May our understanding of how good You are to us motivate and inspire our praise. Enable us to shine for you so others can see you clearly.
For His glory,
Pastor Jeff
