10 Psalms for Overcoming Spiritual Warfare
Greetings! It has been on my spirit to post about combating spiritual warfare because I know there are so many believers out there, young and old who are going through a spiritual battle. Spiritual warfare may last for days, weeks, months, even a year or so, but at the end there is always a victor. Here are 10 psalms God has put on my spirit that can serve as the antidote of spiritual battle and help you become the victor. Be encouraged…!
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, againstthe rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” ~Ephesians 6:12
Psalm 5–Seeking God in the morning
During a spiritual battle, you would want to start off every day conversating with God. This psalm reminds us to ask God to be attentive to our cry in the morning. Our initial thoughts in the waking minutes of the morning can dictate the mood for our entire day. So it is imperative to feed your spirit in the morning with prayer and worship before you officially begin your day. Be intimate with God. Cry out to him! He delights in your tears and is close to the brokenhearted and needy. During a spiritual battle–depending on spiritual maturity–it may be difficult to keep a smile on your face, or maintain a joyful, peaceful spirit. It can be easy to worry and feel accountable for what you are going through. God is taking you to a higher anointing and promoting you. He is using you as a prime example to share a testimony to someone else dealing with something similar.
Psalm 25–Pray for guidance and direction
God is holy. God is omnipresent. God is upright, righteousness, truth, and knowledge. Why wouldn’t you want to be led by such a perfect God? Spiritual warfare can make you feel lost and uncertain. You don’t always know what to do or who to listen to. Sometimes you feel influenced to act out of flesh and not want to tend to the commands of the Spirit. Stay fed by the Holy Spirit by spending time in God’s presence by ways of prayer and worship and the reading of His word. He will guide you to victory, not only if you let Him, but when you obey Him.
Psalm 63–thirst for God more than anything
God should be our main desire and our main focus. Don’t even focus more on your victory alone more than God because your victory is in God. We should not make the mistake and worship what we want instead of our Creator. The more we thirst God and the more we grow dependent on Him, the more joy, peace, and strength you will have during your battle. You will then be more attuned to the Holy Spirit and begin to speak God’s word–and therefore, victory–over your life. Everything you could ever want and need is found in the God we serve! He is alive! He is our source! Seek Him, worship Him, and love Him above all (Matthew 6:33).
Psalm 91–God’s protection and security
This passage is filled with God’s stone-written promises of His protection. This doesn’t mean that we won’t ever face hard challenges as believers, rather it means that God will protect us from situations that will destroy us. Your suffering right now is not in vain and will only birth great things out of you: a higher calling; becoming stronger in the Holy Spirit; a higher anointing; wisdom; being used by God in mightier ways and impacting more souls. God is protecting you right now although it feels otherwise. Keep worshipping in spirit and in truth to stay invulnerable to the enemy’s fiery darts.
Psalm 96–Worship God
Worship God during this battle, it is one of the most powerful weapons you can use. Worship God for who He is and that He can do the impossible. If there is a praise in your spirit during this time, don’t question it nor think it strange…instead, follow that urge and praise God right where you are! That’s the Holy Spirit telling you that it is hungry and needs to give you strength. Praise, worship, and sing your way through your spiritual warfare! Worship your way out of the pit just as Paul and Silas did and let those walls come down! Don’t wait until the battle is over to give God a praise and a “thank you,” give Him glory now because God is still a mighty, unchangeable God regardless of the circumstances.
Psalm 97–Know God’s dominion and power
Do you need a reminder of the greatness of our God? Read Psalm 97. How can a God who is so mighty and potent not take care of you? How can a God who creates and controls the heavens and nature be incapable of providing for you? The only thing God cannot do is fail! God gave me a reminder just a few days ago right when I woke up one morning slightly anxious and overthinking. While still laying in bed with my eyes open gazing somberly out the window into the dimly lit sky, He told me, “See how I made this? How much more will I take care of you? Be patient with me, because surely I am patient with you.” That changed the outlook of my whole day and there was a peace that overcame me…and God will do the same for you.
Psalm 103–Benefits of God
This psalm is everything. It shows how faithful God is towards His righteous. You are dealing with spiritual warfare because you are righteous (Romans 8:28)! You are being elevated and promoted in God and in your life and the enemy is jealous! But this is a battle that God will fight for you and all you have to do is kneel down in prayer and be still. Stay reminded and encouraged by the goodness of God and know that He is holy and will carry you to victory if you have faith and allow Him to work.
Psalm 119:97-104–Obedience
Our faith is insufficient and unfruitful when we just keep it in our minds. Speaking our faith is better. But we don’t see fruit until we actively obey what God commands. How do we know what God requires of us? Read His word and meditate on it daily. Talk with God in prayer (I cannot stress that enough!). Fellowship and attend church regularly. Flood your environment with God’s word and inspirational reminders even if you have to saturate your bedroom wall or office desk with scripture. Becoming connected with God’s word will help you discern God’s will for your life, even now during your righteous battle.
Psalm 130–Wait on God
It can be the hardest thing to do, especially now. Waiting on God is one of the great hallmarks of our spiritual walk because there is a great reward we receive when we wait. We gain a new strength when we wait on God. Waiting on God is important because although God has already worked out our harvest (or whatever it is you are waiting on) in the spiritual realm, we still have to wait for the natural realm to catch up. He has already done it! Whatever God has for us cannot be robbed from us, not by man, nor by force. All we have to do is wait on Him. Keep in mind that waiting on God is a privilege–yes, that’s right. It is a privilege because we are in for a blessing that will exceed our expectations and imaginations and it is my personal belief that the longer we are required to wait on God, the greater our blessing will be.
Psalm 146–Trust in God
Who are you trusting right now? Yourself? Your job? Your transportation? Other people? Your bank account? If your trust lies in any of these things, you will be disappointed. All of these things are transient, they will fail you and are not sufficient for spiritual battle. Remember to put your trust in Someone eternal. God will never fail your nor will He forsake you. This psalm tells us why we should put our trust in God: He gives sight to the blind; provides a home for the homeless; replaces feelings of loneliness with His presence; stretches your last dollars so you can eat every night this week; and is your portion when you are sick. God is limitless, unlike our material possessions that we allow ourselves to be entrusted to. Put your trust in God and see how He shows out!
Spiritual warfare is necessary for spiritual growth and helps us grow closer to God, love Him more, and understand His will for our lives. You will receive the crown of life and abundant blessings if you endure it to the end. God’s abundant blessings on your life!
